Is a Dental Compressor Required?

I've known many dentists who feel a "shop" compressor is adequate to the needs of a dental office. One can certainly save thousands by going this route, but what about local codes, and "NFPA 99" (which reps often quote)? Can you really just go to a home improvement store and buy a compressor which you then just plug in?
