FDA to Study Accuracy of Pulse Oximeters

In a recent FDA announcement, the FDA reminds practitioners of various factors that can affect the accuracy of pulse oximeters.


Such factors as darker skin pigmentation, tobacco use, skin temperature and the use of nail polish among other factors which can all affect accuracy.


For additional details, the FDA has a wide range of recommendations and best practices on their web site in a safety communication.


As with all devices, you should also consult with the manufacturer and pay attention to their instructions, precautions, and limitations of a particular brand.
